L’F16 Falcon della General Dynamics è un caccia leggero multiruolo monomotore americano e un caccia d’assalto. Il progetto dell’F-16 iniziò nel 1971 presso la General Dynamics (che nel 1993 faceva parte del colosso Lockheed Martin), partecipando al concorso per un caccia leggero multiruolo (LWF) per l’aeronautica militare statunitense. Il prototipo YF-16 volò per la prima volta il 2 febbraio 1974. Una svolta in termini tecnici fu l’utilizzo di un sistema di controllo elettrico computerizzato fly-by-wire, che permise di ridurre l’area delle ali e della coda, riducendo così il peso dell’intero velivolo. L’F-16 è stato il primo caccia al mondo a utilizzare tale sistema. Le prime versioni erano in gran parte realizzate in leghe di alluminio (circa l’83% della struttura totale), ma col tempo hanno lasciato il posto ai materiali compositi. Le diverse versioni dell’F-16 sono alimentate da tre versioni di motori: Pratt-Whitney F-100-PW-200, General Electric F110-GE100 e Pratt-Whitney F-100-PW-2020. Il “cervello” del sistema di guida era il radar APG-66, poi sostituito dal radar APG-68 (V). Vale la pena notare che il progetto dell’YF-16 si rivelò un successo tale da vincere non solo la competizione LWF negli Stati Uniti (in concorrenza con l’aereo Northrop YF-17), ma anche il contratto del centenario per un caccia multiruolo per i Paesi europei della NATO. I suoi rivali erano il Dassault Mirage F.1 e il SAAB J-37 Viggen. La produzione in serie dell’F-16 iniziò nel 1975. Vi parteciparono anche i Paesi europei della NATO per i quali rappresentava un’iniezione di nuove tecnologie aeronautiche. L’assemblaggio finale è stato effettuato negli Stati Uniti, in Belgio e nei Paesi Bassi. Il primo F-16A Fighting Falcon di serie ha volato il 7 agosto 1978. Si tratta di una versione d’assalto dell’F-16, destinata principalmente a contrastare obiettivi terrestri. L’F-16 ha dato prova di sé anche in combattimento, con una serie di vittorie aeree nella guerra in Libano (1982) e durante l’operazione Desert Storm (1991). Alla fine del XX secolo, erano stati prodotti più di 4.000 esemplari di questo aereo di successo. Esistevano sei versioni di base dell’F-16, contrassegnate come A, C, E (monoposto) e B, D, F (biposto). Sulla base di questi sei modelli sono stati creati numerosi aggiornamenti, il più delle volte associati alla sostituzione dell’avionica, contrassegnati come “Block”. Dal 2006, l’F-16 è in servizio anche nell’aviazione polacca. Il Ministero della Difesa polacco ha deciso che l’F-16 sarebbe stato la spina dorsale della forza aerea modernizzata, rifiutando le offerte di Dessault e SAAB, anche se in questo caso si trattava di caccia Mirrage F2000 e JAS-39 Grippen. Indubbiamente, la somma più alta proposta dall’azienda americana nell’ambito della cosiddetta transazione offset.
