Il Grumman E-2 Hawkeye è il successore dell’E-1B (TBF-3 Avanger modificato nella seconda guerra mondiale) costruito da Grumman a metà degli anni Cinquanta. Nel 1964, la Marina statunitense ha consegnato il primo aereo costruito specificamente per compiti AEW. Si trattava dell’E-2A. Entro il 67, erano stati costruiti 59 velivoli di questo tipo. Furono molto utilizzati durante il conflitto vietnamita. Dopo il suo completamento, furono apportate delle modifiche e fu data la nuova designazione di E-2B. La più importante fu quella di dotarlo di un nuovo computer digitale programmabile ad alta velocità. Il programma E-2C iniziò nel 1968. Si tratta della terza generazione di aerei Hawkeye. Il prototipo dell’E-2C ha effettuato il primo volo nel 1971 e il primo velivolo è stato consegnato alla Marina statunitense nel 1973. Nel marzo 1994 erano stati prodotti o convertiti 139 velivoli da versioni precedenti. L’E-2C Hawkeye previene non solo gli attacchi a sorpresa di caccia e bombardieri nemici, ma anche di aerei a bassa quota, missili e navi da guerra. L’E-2 appartiene alla categoria di aerei AEWC & C, che può essere tradotta come Air Early Warning, Command and Control System. L’aereo è entrato in servizio con la Marina statunitense nel 1973. Tra gli altri utenti di questa piattaforma radar figurano Egitto, Giappone, Singapore e Taiwan. L’Hawkeye, con la sua maestosa antenna rotante sulla cresta e centinaia di chilogrammi di apparecchiature elettroniche, può monitorare 35 milioni di chilometri cubi di spazio aereo e oltre 480.000 chilometri quadrati di superficie oceanica, rilevando efficacemente una minaccia per la squadra della flotta (aerei, razzi, navi). Talvolta le sue capacità sono utilizzate anche da organizzazioni civili (controllo del traffico aereo). L’Occhio di Falco è una piattaforma difensiva e, grazie al fatto che opera ad un’altitudine di diversi chilometri, il suo orizzonte radar è chiaramente ingrandito e può “guardare” più lontano di un radar a terra. Il sistema radar AN/APS-145 di cui è dotato l’E-2 rileva, identifica e traccia automaticamente bersagli a più di 500 chilometri di distanza, mentre i suoi sistemi di rilevamento passivo rilevano e classificano i bersagli al di là della portata del radar. Le sue capacità possono essere utilizzate anche per comandare missioni di assalto, contrastare il contrabbando di droga e condurre missioni di salvataggio (SAR). Un Hawkeye potrebbe controllare il traffico aereo in tutta la Polonia e contribuire a sigillare il nostro confine orientale. Il radar a lungo raggio ad alta risoluzione che lavora con dispositivi IFF (auto-ricognizione aliena) e sistemi passivi (ESM) supervisionati da un computer non solo crea un quadro situazionale dello spazio aereo, ma fornisce anche informazioni in tempo reale necessarie per condurre attività di difesa aerea per i centri di comando a terra, o per i propri intercettori (ad esempio i caccia F-18). Tutte queste informazioni (rotta, velocità, IFF, ceiling) sono trasmesse in telemetria su linee di trasmissione digitali ad alta velocità. Alla fine del 1994, la Northrop-Grumman ha iniziato a lavorare sul prossimo programma di aggiornamento dell’E-2C (miglioramento dell’inseguimento dei bersagli a terra, IFF, miglioramento del 40% del raggio d’azione del radar AN/APS-145, nuove cabine di pilotaggio con display multifunzione a colori, nuove console per gli operatori del sistema di rilevamento, che consentono la cooperazione con il sistema AEGIS montato sugli incrociatori Ticonderoga, ecc. GPS). Queste modifiche hanno permesso alla “Oku Sokola” di entrare nel XXI secolo. L’equipaggio è composto da 2 piloti e 3 operatori. È alimentato da due motori turboelica Allison T56-A-427. Questo tipo di propulsione sembra arcaico nell’era dei jet e dei razzi, ma è particolarmente adatto alle missioni svolte da Hawkeye. È caratterizzato da un basso consumo di carburante (possibilità di voli di lunga durata ad alta quota) e da un decollo breve (decollo da una portaerei). Può circolare per più di 4 ore a una distanza di 350 km dalla base.
