L’F-14 Tomcat ha seguito una storia di “gatti” in ambito militare. L’F4F Wildcat e l’F6F Hellcat hanno combattuto nei cieli anni prima che il Tomcat prendesse il volo. Alla fine degli anni ’60, la Marina statunitense abbandonò il programma TFX e decise di concentrarsi su un aereo dedicato alla difesa della flotta. Grumman aveva già iniziato a sviluppare l’F-14, che era decisamente destinato a una designazione “Cat”. Il responsabile di questo progetto era l’ammiraglio Tom Conolly, vice capo delle operazioni navali per l’aviazione. L’aereo fu soprannominato “Tom’s Cat” molto prima che venisse adottato il nome ufficiale di “Tomcat”.
