Il Boeing 767 è un jet passeggeri a lungo raggio, ad ala bassa, bimotore, di produzione americana. La propulsione è fornita da due motori Pratt and Whitney JT-9D o PW4000 o General Electric CF6 o Rolls-Royce RB211. Il volo del prototipo è avvenuto nel 1981, mentre la produzione in serie è iniziata nel 1982 ed è tuttora in corso. Ad aprile 2014 erano stati prodotti 1.030 esemplari di questo aereo. Il Boeing 767 è stato creato come tentativo da parte dell’azienda di Seattle di rispondere alla crisi del carburante degli anni ’70, che ha imposto la creazione di aerei in grado di operare un collegamento a lunga distanza, ma consumando molto meno carburante rispetto al passato. Inoltre, è in questo periodo che l’azienda Boeing si è trasformata in un temibile concorrente sotto forma del consorzio europeo Airbus, che dal 1972 offriva il modello di successo A300. Il Boeing 767 si rivelò una macchina innovativa: era dotato di moderne apparecchiature elettroniche che consentivano di ridurre l’equipaggio a 2 persone. Tuttavia, l’uso del sistema fly-by-wire non fu deciso, nonostante gli aerei Airbus lo utilizzassero. Nel corso della produzione in serie, vennero create diverse versioni di sviluppo di questo aereo di grande successo, che si differenziavano principalmente per la capacità dell’abitacolo e per i motori utilizzati, oltre che per l’autonomia di volo. La versione 747-400ER, testata nel 2000, può trasportare fino a 375 passeggeri e l’autonomia di volo è di 10.415 km.
