L’Airbus A320 è un aereo di linea bimotore a getto di fascia media, ad ala bassa, di produzione prevalentemente franco-tedesca. La propulsione è fornita da due motori turboventola CFM International CFM56 o IAE V2500. Il volo del prototipo è avvenuto nel 1987, mentre la produzione in serie è iniziata nel 1988 ed è tuttora in corso. Fino all’inizio del 2016 sono stati prodotti oltre 6.800 aeromobili di questo tipo! L’Airbus A320 è stato creato come macchina da offrire principalmente alle compagnie aeree europee e asiatiche come concorrente del Boeing 727. Il costruttore, Airbus, ha posto l’accento sull’uso di un’elettronica all’avanguardia, in primo luogo il sistema fly-by-wire, noto nell’aviazione militare (ad esempio negli aerei F-16), ma per la prima volta in un aereo passeggeri! Sono stati utilizzati anche una nuova avionica con cabina di vetro e un sistema centrale di gestione del volo. L’equipaggio composto da sole due persone è una novità assoluta, che ha influito chiaramente e positivamente sui costi operativi dell’aeromobile. Inoltre, rispetto alle prime versioni di serie, l’A320 ha un’autonomia superiore del 50% rispetto al suo principale concorrente, il Boeing 727. Grazie alla sua bassa affidabilità e all’utilizzo di molte soluzioni all’avanguardia, l’A320 si è rivelato un grande successo commerciale di Airbus. Fino al 2012, gli aerei di questo tipo hanno trasportato 7 miliardi di persone e hanno volato per 120 milioni di ore!
