Anche se parzialmente oscurato dal famoso Mustang, il Republic P-47 Thunderbolt si distinse come intercettore ad alta quota e come scorta ai bombardieri. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale furono prodotti più Thunderbolt di qualsiasi altro caccia americano e questo aereo di sette tonnellate divenne estremamente popolare tra i piloti dell’A.A.F. per la sua capacità di assorbire ingenti danni in battaglia e rimanere in volo. Forse il tributo più importante a questo aereo è il fatto che tutti e 10 i principali assi del Thunderbolt sono sopravvissuti alla guerra. Il P-47 era in grado di superare facilmente in picchiata i caccia nemici e di “distribuire” terribili punizioni con le sue otto mitragliatrici Browning da 50 cal. Browning.
