Successore del biplano Tiger Moth, famoso in tutto il mondo, il Chipmunk è stato il primo progetto originale di deHaviland Canada ed è stato costruito in quantità in Canada e in Gran Bretagna per la R.A.F. Utilizzato principalmente come addestratore di base per fornire ai cadetti dell’aria le istruzioni di volo elementari prima di passare all’addestramento degli aerei a reazione. La casa madre canadese ha prodotto un totale di 218 DHC-1, di cui uno è ancora in servizio con la R.C.A.F. Millequattordici sono stati costruiti dalla deHaviland nel Regno Unito, sia in versione militare che civile. Come aereo civile, il Chipmunk viene spesso visto in competizioni acrobatiche.
