Su questo irascibile caccia britannico della Prima Guerra Mondiale hanno volato piloti illustri come il tenente colonnello R. Collishaw, il maggiore D. R. MacLaren e il più famoso di tutti, il capitano Roy Brown. Il capitano Roy Brown partecipò al dogfight che portò alla morte dell’asso degli assi tedeschi, Manfred Von Richthofen, noto come il “Barone Rosso”. Il Camel aveva una grande agilità in combattimento grazie alla fantastica coppia del suo motore rotativo e al fatto che il motore, il pilota e le armi si trovavano tutti sui primi sette piedi della cellula di legno.
