Soprannominato “Sweetheart of Okinawa” dai Marines statunitensi e “Whistling Death” dai giapponesi, il Corsair si comportò efficacemente in due anni: il conflitto del Pacifico della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e l’impegno in Corea dei primi anni Cinquanta. Il primo Corsair di serie volò il 25 giugno 1942, in un momento in cui l’offensiva giapponese sembrava irresistibile. Solo alla fine dello stesso anno, con la consegna delle prime squadriglie di Corsair nelle mani dei Marines statunitensi a Guadalcanal e nelle Isole Salomone, le sorti dei combattimenti aerei si rovesciarono definitivamente a favore delle Forze Alleate. Alla Marina britannica, all’inizio del 1944, va il merito di aver introdotto il Corsair nel servizio delle portaerei. Nove mesi dopo, la Marina degli Stati Uniti spianò la strada affinché il Corsair diventasse il pilastro della sua potente flotta di portaerei.
