Considerato l’aereo più importante nella storia del trasporto aereo, il DC-3 volò per la prima volta nel 1935. La Douglas Aircraft lo costruì per sostituire il più piccolo DC-2. La sua velocità di crociera di 180 MPH lo rendeva il più veloce dell’epoca e trasportava 11 passeggeri in più rispetto al Boeing 247. Nel 1938, l’80% di tutto il traffico aereo commerciale americano era trasportato sui DC-3.
