Il P-40 si guadagnò la fama imperitura di “Tigre Volante” della Seconda Guerra Mondiale quando venne impiegato dal Gruppo Volontari del generale Claire Chennault per combattere i giapponesi in Cina e in Birmania. Fu utilizzato anche in Medio Oriente dalla R.A.F. britannica e soprannominato Tomahawk e Kittyhawk. Allo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il P-40 fu l’unico caccia disponibile in quantità per l’A.A.F. statunitense, essendo il primo aereo monoposto americano ad essere prodotto in serie negli Stati Uniti. Alla fine della guerra, oltre 14.000 aerei erano stati consegnati ai teatri di combattimento.
