Il B-24 Liberator fu costruito in quantità maggiore rispetto a qualsiasi altro bombardiere statunitense della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Il modello prototipo fu prodotto dalla Consolidated Aircraft Corp. e il primo XB-24 prese il volo il 29 dicembre 1939. Era dotato del rivoluzionario design dell’ala Davis che permetteva al B-24 di trasportare lo stesso carico utile del suo rivale, il Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, ma con una velocità e un raggio d’azione molto maggiori. Durante la guerra furono costruiti oltre 18.000 Liberator.
