Il Republic P-43 Lancer era un monomotore da caccia monoplano ad ala bassa, interamente in metallo, costruito dalla Republic e consegnato per la prima volta all’United States Army Air Corps nel 1940. Un’evoluzione proposta era il P-44 Rocket. Pur non essendo un caccia particolarmente eccezionale, il P-43A aveva ottime prestazioni ad alta quota e un efficace sistema di ossigeno. Veloce e ben armato, con eccellenti capacità a lungo raggio, fino all’arrivo del Lockheed P-38 Lightning, il Lancer era l’unico caccia americano in grado di intercettare un ricognitore giapponese Mitsubishi Ki-46 “Dinah” alle velocità e alle altezze a cui volava. Inoltre, il P-43 ha effettuato molte missioni di ricognizione fotografica a lungo raggio e ad alta quota fino a quando non è stato sostituito dagli F-4/F-5 Lightning (varianti del P-38) sia nell’USAAF che nella RAAF.
