Il Bell P-63 Kingcobra è un caccia di produzione americana, successore del P-39 Aircobra. Anche se i due aerei sembrano molto simili, in realtà il P-63 era un progetto completamente nuovo e gli aerei non avevano parti o componenti in comune. Rispetto al suo predecessore, il P-63 aveva prestazioni molto migliori ad alta quota, soprattutto grazie al nuovo motore turbocompresso e al nuovo disegno dell’ala a flusso laminare, ma non era all’altezza dei P-51 Mustang già in uso e non entrò in servizio nell’USAF come caccia. La maggior parte della produzione fu spedita con l’assistenza Lend-Lease all’URSS. La versione RP-63G fu progettata come bersaglio volante fin dall’inizio. Due P-63C furono ricostruiti come prototipi. Sulla superficie laterale della fusoliera e sulla superficie superiore delle ali sono presenti luci che si illuminano in caso di impatto e la presa d’aria del motore è stata modificata. Di questa versione furono ordinati 450 esemplari. Doveva essere alimentato da un motore Allison V-1710-135 con una potenza al decollo di 1200 CV, il rapporto di trasmissione del compressore è stato modificato. Fu installata una corazza rinforzata in prossimità della cabina del pilota, con un peso di 952,5 kg. Inoltre, non avevano lo stabilizzatore inferiore della fusoliera. Tuttavia, furono prodotti solo 30 esemplari e il resto dell’ordine fu cancellato. Nel 1948, questa versione fu rinominata QF-63G. Tutte le versioni di RP-63 raggiungevano una velocità massima di circa 482 km/h. Dei 3.303 P-63 prodotti, 2.397 furono inviati in URSS nell’ambito del Lend-Lease; 21 di essi andarono persi durante il trasporto. Mentre secondo la storia “ufficiale” dell’Unione Sovietica l’importanza dell’aiuto di Lend-Lease viene marginalizzata, in realtà sia l’Aircobra che il Kingcobra si comportarono bene nelle condizioni tattiche del fronte orientale e il P-63 grazie, tra l’altro, al fatto di essere armato con un cannone, si rivelò un ottimo aereo d’attacco, spesso utilizzato come “distruttore di carri armati”. Dopo la fine della guerra, questi P-63, rimasti in gran numero in servizio sovietico, ricevettero la designazione “Fred” nel codice NATO.
