Il McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle è un aereo bimotore da caccia e da attacco americano, il cui primo volo è avvenuto il 27 luglio 1972. L’F-15 è il risultato dell’esperienza acquisita nei combattimenti aerei sul Vietnam ed è anche la risposta dell’USAAF ai caccia sovietici Mig-23 e Mig-25. È stato creato nell’ambito del progetto FX (Fighter Experimental), il cui vincitore è stato McDonnell-Douglas nel 1969. Nella progettazione dell’F-15 è stata posta particolare enfasi sulla massima riduzione dei tempi di servizio. Principalmente, da un lato, ci si è basati sull’installazione di elementi il più possibile facili da usare e, dall’altro, sull’impiego di sistemi automatici, che in un certo senso alleggeriscono le persone. Di conseguenza, il successore dell’F-4 Phantom, superandolo sotto tutti gli aspetti, può essere servito in metà tempo. Un altro punto di forza dell’F-15 è la coppia di motori Pratt-Whitney F100 con postbruciatore, che producono 4.500 kg di spinta in più rispetto al peso della macchina stessa, consentendole di effettuare virate strette senza sacrificare la grande velocità. Inoltre, consentono di sospendere un’enorme quantità di armi aggiuntive a 8 nodi sotto le ali e la fusoliera. Dal momento in cui l’F-15 è entrato in servizio, sono state create diverse varianti. Le versioni C e D sono la seconda generazione di aerei rispettivamente monoposto e biposto, che hanno sostituito le versioni A e B nel 1979. Esternamente non differiscono molto da queste ultime, ma l’avionica ha subito una modifica completa, che ha reso l’Aquila un’arma ancora più letale. Negli anni ’80, l’F-15D sperimentò anche i missili antisatellite ASAT. Nello stesso periodo fu sviluppata una versione dell’F15-E Strike Eagle. A differenza dei modelli precedenti, la versione E non è solo una macchina da caccia utilizzata per la superiorità aerea, ma anche una macchina d’assalto con un’ampia gamma di possibilità di attacco a bersagli terrestri. La versione E è entrata in servizio nel 1988 e si prevede che rimarrà in linea fino al 2035. Un’altra variante è l’F-15J, esportato e prodotto su licenza in Giappone. Gli F-15 sono stati esportati in diversi Paesi, tra cui Giappone, Israele, Arabia Saudita e Corea del Sud. L’F-15 si è rivelato una macchina molto valida, ottenendo vittorie aeree, tra l’altro, durante l’operazione Desert Storm e l’invasione dell’Iraq del 2003.
