Il Jaguar è il risultato di una joint venture anglo-francese nata nel 1965 per costruire un aereo da addestramento avanzato e da attacco. Inizialmente la RAF prevedeva di utilizzarlo solo per scopi scolastici, ma negli anni successivi fu destinato anche a compiti di assalto. All’inizio degli anni ’60, l’Aeronautica militare francese era alla ricerca di un nuovo aereo per sostituire gli aerei da addestramento T-33 e Fouga Magister, da tempo in servizio, e l’aereo da attacco Mystere IV. Nell’aprile 1964 iniziò la progettazione di una nuova struttura, inizialmente denominata ECAT. Il progetto Br 121 di Breguet passò alla fase successiva. Fu allora che la RAF si interessò al programma, poiché aveva bisogno di un aereo da addestramento con caratteristiche simili. Il 17 maggio 1965 fu firmato un accordo di produzione congiunta tra Francia (Breguet) e Gran Bretagna (British Aerospace). La joint venture che ne risultò prese il nome di SEPECAT. Il primo prototipo decollò l’8 settembre 1968. I problemi di cooperazione causarono dei ritardi, che si tradussero in un ritardo nell’entrata in servizio. Le prime unità iniziarono a essere introdotte nel 1972. Il programma di velivoli da addestramento è stato convertito in velivoli da attacco. Le versioni inglese e francese si differenziano per alcuni elementi minori, principalmente elementi minori dell’equipaggiamento di produzione di un determinato Paese. Furono costruite 573 macchine. 403 per l’Inghilterra/Francia, 54 per Oman/Ecuador/Nigeria, 116 per l’India (70 prodotti su licenza). Il Jaguar è armato con due cannoni fissi a canna singola ADEN da 30 mm sul lato inferiore dello scafo. Su quattro piloni sotto le ali, di cui uno sotto la fusoliera, può trasportare: bombe a grappolo (Belouga, BL.755); bombe classiche (EU3, 454 kg); bombe a caduta ritardata; bombe per distruggere le piste (Durandal, BAP.100); bombe a guida laser (GBEN, BAP.100).); bombe a guida laser (GBU-10A, BGL.400); razzi aria/terra; Sea Eagle antinave guidato; antiradar ARMAT o ALARM (aria/terra AS-30L); razzi aria/terra non guidati; bombe nucleari AN52. Oltre all’autodifesa, il Jaguar può essere armato con missili aria-aria AIM-9 Sidewinder o Matra R.550 Magic o pod di disturbo su due piloni sopra l’ala. Lo scafo del Jaguar è allungato con una grande coda obliqua. Prese d’aria per due motori a reazione rettangolari. Ali in configurazione ad ala alta. Sottocarro a due ruote.
