La USS Enterprise (CV-6) era una portaerei americana, la cui chiglia fu impostata nel 1934, varata nell’ottobre 1936 e messa in servizio presso la US Navy nel maggio 1938. La nave era lunga 252 metri, larga 33,4 metri e il suo dislocamento totale al momento del varo era di 25.500 tonnellate. La velocità massima della USS Enterprise era di circa 32-33 nodi e il suo armamento principale consisteva in 90 aerei di bordo. La USS Enterprise fu la seconda portaerei della classe Yorktown. Per la costruzione di questo tipo di nave fu utilizzata l’esperienza acquisita durante l’esercizio delle navi di tipo Lexington. Innanzitutto, si decise di costruire portaerei relativamente grandi, con la massima enfasi sul numero di aerei imbarcati e sulla massima velocità, a scapito della corazzatura. In questo modo si andava nella stessa direzione dei progettisti giapponesi e in quella opposta della Royal Navy britannica. Vale la pena aggiungere che la costruzione della portaerei popolarmente nota come “Big E” faceva parte del programma di ricostruzione dell’economia americana dopo la Grande Depressione del 1929, lanciato dal presidente Franklin D. Roosevelt. Durante il suo lungo e meritato servizio, la USS Enterprise fu ammodernata più volte: nel 1940 ricevette un radar di sorveglianza aerea (tipo CXAM-1), e successivamente nel 1942 ricevette un nuovo radar SC-2. Nel corso dei combattimenti nel Pacifico, furono cambiate anche le armi antiaeree, che nell’ottobre 1943 avevano 40 cannoni da 40 mm e 50 da 20 mm. Allo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale nel Pacifico, la USS Enterprise si trovava nei pressi di Pearl Harbor e, poco dopo l’attacco giapponese, partecipò a un’infruttuosa ricerca degli assalitori. Nell’aprile 1942, la portaerei coprì il famoso Raid Doolittle a Tokyo. In seguito a questa operazione, svolse uno dei ruoli più importanti nella Battaglia delle Midway nel giugno 1942. Più tardi, nel 1942, la USS Enterprise fu intensamente coinvolta nelle operazioni navali nell’area di Guadalcanal, ad esempio nella battaglia dell’isola di Santa Cruz. Nel novembre 1943 coprì gli sbarchi americani su Tarawa e Makin. All’inizio del 1944 prese parte ai combattimenti nell’area delle Isole Marshall e nel giugno dello stesso anno partecipò alla Battaglia del Mare delle Filippine. Nel 1945 sostenne le operazioni americane su Iwo-Jima e Okinawa, venendo danneggiato nel corso delle stesse. Fu tolta dalla linea e demolita nel 1960. La USS Enterprise è stata una delle navi più illustri e decorate della Marina statunitense durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
